Mary Ridley – The Merry Widow – Jarrow Express – Friday 18th March 1910

Miss Mary Ridley, talented young actress who claims Newcastle her home, fulfilling the leading role in Mr George Edwardes’ Company appearing in “The Merry Widow” at the Theatre Royal, Jarrow, during the present week. Miss Ridley, who is only 21 years of age, is granddaughter of the late Thomas Ridley, a well-known barrister at-law in Newcastle, and daughter of Mr Louis C. Ridley, also of Newcastle. At an early age Miss Ridley demonstrated that she was possessed of abilities of a high order in the histrionic art, and subsequently she went abroad, where she studied music for some years. She made her debut on the stage proper fifteen months ago, when she appeared in “The Merry Widow,” under the control of Mr George Edwardes. She was later connected with a company producing “The Dollar Princess,” following which engagement she was selected to take the part Sonia, the Merry Widow, in the present company on tour. Miss Ridley has highly cultured voice of great range, and she acts with a charm and naiveté that bespeaks her predilection for musical comedy, which is her favourite class of play. Although she may be looked upon as one of Newcastle’s latest recruits to the stage, her career has been a distinct success, and already she has earned many splendid tributes by her acting. Miss Ridley, who is great favourite with the other artistes of the company, is very fond of outdoor life and travelling, and her most favoured recreations are riding and golf. She is also fond of drawing, and, of course, of music.

    • Thank you, I originally bought the picture which was being sold as a “gipsy girl” only later discovering that it was Mary Ridley as Sonia. I try to find a related article where possible to support the postcard
