“Hogmanay” Dance – The Scotsman – 1921

The Scotsman - Saturday 31 December 1921

“Hogmanay” Dance.

“Hogmanay” was celebrated last night at “The Balmoral” – Edinburgh’s latest dancing salon. The ball, arranged for the occasion, proved a popular one, and the floor of the dancing room – capable of holding as many as 75 couples – was well filled. From eight o’clock in the evening until early this morning dancing continued, and was enlivened at periods by the distribution of prizes, such as chocolates and cigarettes, to the couple nearest the figure on the floor corresponding to that indicated on the roulette wheel. This innovation has attained a great vogue, and the success of the evening was heightened by the distribution of Parisian novelties such as paper caps, streamers, and feathered darts. The ballroom was decorated with holly and mistletoe, and there was a cold buffet at the disposal of the dancers.

As a dancing salon, as well as in other ways, “The Balmoral” is everyday attaining increased popularity. Further space is being utilised, and there are now excellent lounges and accommodation. Not least among the attractions is the jazz band which played last night, and is a very much appreciated feature of “The Balmoral.”

Among those who took part in last night’s ball was Miss Gabrielle Ray.
