Gabrielle Ray: Glamour Queen of the Edwardian Postcard

This article by John Devaney appeared in the November 2008 edition of “Picture Postcard Monthly.”

Devaney responds to the question “Who on earth is Gabrielle Ray?” originally posed by Henry Jaremco, formally at www.wickedlady.com/gray and now   http://www.gabrielleray.com/  concluding that it is a question which will sadly never be adequately answered and that she will continue to be a bewitching enigma.

Although there are numerous press cuttings regarding her stage performances and subsequent divorce from Eric Loder but very little else is available. Roy Sambourne’s retrospective account of their relationship is sketchy and often negative and tells us very little about the person behind the popular stage and postcard image. Equally her relatives have been reluctant to comment on her life, perhaps being protective and not wishing to dwell on that troubled period of her life. However, it may also be that there is a reluctance to allow closer scrutiny of the illness that affected Miss Ray, her sister Gladys and possibly other members of the family and the circumstances that contributed to the confinement of Miss Ray for the latter half of her life.
