Gabrielle Ray (Rapid 1626)

This card was addressed to the, Miss Martin, Institution St. Josephs, 17 Rue de Monceau, Paris. This is shown as the Institution of the Sisters of Saint Joseph which may have been a convent school which was destroyed in 1910.

This period appears to have been particularly troubled in France. “Hundreds convents, schools, and charitable institutions, belonging to the Sisters of St. Joseph, have been suppressed, and the religious have been obliged to seek safety and shelter in other lands. Consequently many new missions, in the remotest parts of the United States, have been recently opened. In 1903 four sisters who fled from France at the beginning of the troubles there, sought and obtained hospitality at St. Joseph’s Convent, Flushing. They remained nearly two years, or until they had sufficiently mastered the English language, and fitted themselves for educational work awaiting them in Minnesota, where they have since opened three little mission houses. New Advent

The comment on the bottom of the card is interesting and refers to Miss Ray being Marie Studholme’s understudy in The Orchid. Miss Studholme played the part of Josephine Zaccary, previously played by Ethel Sydney.
